The Painting Studio

The Painting Studio is a self-reflexive and self-propagating installation that can be adapted site specifically. It is a meditation on painting without actually involving painting as such, or at least only in the oblique manner of two canvases, the vehicle for a reductive painterly intervention in black ink that has been applied to the sides of the two canvases by means of an airbrush. It was the creation of these two works that instituted the photographic documentation of the more mundane tasks relating to production of the paintings – the building of stretchers, measuring cutting and stretching of the canvas, the masking and spraying of the canvases and their hanging. This led to the camera also capturing details around the studio during the period of work, relating directly to the paintings, the gradual construction of The Painting Studio installation itself, but also more indirect, unrelated objects, culminating in a series of over 100 images. Of these images several were printed on to canvas to become major elements of the installation. The project’s materials continue to proliferate and self-generate, with for example documentation of each exhibition, being in turn, incorporated into further future presentations. This repository of photographs functions as both the project’s archive and its motor, being the prime producer of the imagery to be exhibited.
